It’s True Faith

“The essence of idolatry is the entertainment of thoughts about God that are unworthy of Him. It begins in the mind and may be present where no overt act of worship has taken place. … Wrong ideas about God are not only the fountain from which the polluted waters of idolatry flow; they are themselves idolatrous. The idolater simply imagines things about God and acts as if they were true.“

AW Tozer, Knowledge of the Holy by AW Tozer, Kindle Edition, Loc 89

God has revealed himself sufficiently through the Creation itself

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth. For what can be known about God is plain to them, because God has shown it to them. For his invisible attributes, namely, his eternal power and divine nature, have been clearly perceived, ever since the creation of the world, in the things that have been made. So they are without excuse.” Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬-‭20‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Mankind has not only rejected God, but has actively suppressed the knowledge of God

“For the wrath of God is revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who by their unrighteousness suppress the truth.” ‭Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭18‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Mankind has chosen to worship idols instead of God

“Claiming to be wise, they became fools, and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images resembling mortal man and birds and animals and creeping things.” Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭22‬-‭23‬ ‭ESV‬‬

A natural consequence of idolatry and evidence of its existence is the prevalence and acceptance of homosexuality in a society

“Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their hearts to impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves, because they exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, who is blessed forever! Amen. For this reason God gave them up to dishonorable passions. For their women exchanged natural relations for those that are contrary to nature; and the men likewise gave up natural relations with women and were consumed with passion for one another, men committing shameless acts with men and receiving in themselves the due penalty for their error.” Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭24‬-‭27‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Idolatry also results in a general moral corruption

“And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done. They were filled with all manner of unrighteousness, evil, covetousness, malice. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, maliciousness. They are gossips, slanderers, haters of God, insolent, haughty, boastful, inventors of evil, disobedient to parents, foolish, faithless, heartless, ruthless. Though they know God’s righteous decree that those who practice such things deserve to die, they not only do them but give approval to those who practice them.” Romans‬ ‭1‬:‭28‬-‭32‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Our tendency to judge others, is evidence that…

  1. We ourselves recognize a transcendent moral law that exists outside ourselves, which is further evidence of God’s existence. (Implied)
  2. Violation of these moral laws requires judgement of some kind
  3. We ourselves are worthy of judgement since we do the very things we condemn others for doing

“Therefore you have no excuse, O man, every one of you who judges. For in passing judgment on another you condemn yourself, because you, the judge, practice the very same things. We know that the judgment of God rightly falls on those who practice such things. Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God. ‭‭Romans‬ ‭2‬:‭1‬-‭3‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Some will acknowledge God, but will presumptuously depend on his mercy.

“Do you suppose, O man—you who judge those who practice such things and yet do them yourself—that you will escape the judgment of God? Or do you presume on the riches of his kindness and forbearance and patience, not knowing that God’s kindness is meant to lead you to repentance?” Romans‬ ‭2‬:‭3‬-‭4‬ ‭ESV‬‬

Acknowledging the existence of God is not enough. There must also be repentance.

Disobedience to God is itself idolatry

At the heart of it, when a person chooses to think or act in a way that is contrary to the specific word of the Lord, they are not merely disobedient, but also idolatrous because in essence they are elevating themselves above God and worshipping themselves over God.

“For rebellion is as the sin of divination, and presumption is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, he has also rejected you from being king.” ‭1 Samuel‬ ‭15‬:‭23‬ ‭ESV‬‬

“Put to death therefore what is earthly in you: sexual immorality, impurity, passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry.” Colossians‬ ‭3‬:‭5‬ ‭ESV‬‬
