1. It is a privilege to attain knowledge and understanding
It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.
Proverbs 25:2
2. Wisdom is more valuable than riches
“Take my instruction instead of silver, and knowledge rather than choice gold, for wisdom is better than jewels, and all that you may desire cannot compare with her.”
Proverbs 8:10-11 ESV
“How much better to get wisdom than gold! To get understanding is to be chosen rather than silver.”
Proverbs 16:16 ESV
3. Wisdom is strength
“I have counsel and sound wisdom; I have insight; I have strength.”
Proverbs 8:14 ESV
4. God’s ways are not our ways
“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.”
Isaiah 55:8-9 ESV
“There is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death….The simple believes everything, but the prudent gives thought to his steps.”
Proverbs 14:12, 15 ESV
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths. Be not wise in your own eyes; fear the Lord, and turn away from evil. It will be healing to your flesh and refreshment to your bones.”
Proverbs 3:5-8 ESV
5. The wisdom of the “world” is foolishness
“For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,” and again, “The Lord knows the thoughts of the wise, that they are futile.””
1 Corinthians 3:19-20 ESV
6. The testimony of God does not depend on wise speech, but on a demonstration of the power of the Holy Spirit
“And I, when I came to you, brothers, did not come proclaiming to you the testimony of God with lofty speech or wisdom. For I decided to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and him crucified. And I was with you in weakness and in fear and much trembling, and my speech and my message were not in plausible words of wisdom, but in demonstration of the Spirit and of power, so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.”
1 Corinthians 2:1-5 ESV
7. Whatever knowledge I think I have, is only partial and contingent when ultimate reality is yet to be revealed someday
“Love never ends. As for prophecies, they will pass away; as for tongues, they will cease; as for knowledge, it will pass away. For we know in part and we prophesy in part, but when the perfect comes, the partial will pass away.
For now we see in a mirror dimly, but then face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I have been fully known.”
1 Corinthians 13:8-10, 12 ESV
